Hey Joe, What’s Your Handicap…A “Did You Know” Service Announcement

Did you know…
The term “handicap” originated in a lottery game known as “Hand In Cap” in the 1600’s, which involved players placing money in a cap. The term later moved into horse racing where it meant bringing the strongest competitors back to the field by giving them extra weight to carry. In golf, a handicap became the number of strokes a player could subtract from their score for a better chance against their fellow players, so a bigger handicap is actually an advantage in the sport. The term is still used in golf today. Only in 1915 did the term become one used to describe disabled persons, when it was used to describe crippled children. [Via]
