Last Saturday (Oct. 23rd) marked the 5th Annual Acton Up with Down Syndrome Buddy Walk. The walk, held at Panama City Beach’s Aaron Bessant Park, was but one Buddy Walk participating in the national walk campaign to promote acceptance and inclusion as well as celebrate and honor Americans with Down Syndrome. Acton Up with Downs, Inc. is Bay County’s own Down Syndrome support group and is responsible for hosting the annual Buddy Walk for our local area.

What began in 1995, the Buddly Walk for Down Syndrome has grown from 17 walks to more than 300 in 2010 across the country and around the world. Last year alone, 250,000 people participated in Buddy Walk and raised more then $9.5 million to benefit local programs and services as well as the national advocacy initiatives that benefit all individuals with Down Syndrome.

Buddy Walk is an annual event hosted in October, the official National Disabilities Awareness Month. To keep track of the local Buddy Walk for Bay County and to get involved in other local programs for Down Syndrome, visit Acton Up With Down Syndrome, located in Panama City Beach, or visit official website.
